What are the factors that affect the guitars sound?

When I strum the strings in my guitar it produces a flat plain sound. I am not sure if it’s because of the strings or something else. I think that the shape of the guitar and the wood type can change the sound of a guitar.
So is that the reason that acoustic guitars vary in the price?

What are some cheap, yet still good quality acoustic guitars?

Somewhere in the 300-400 dollar range. I really liked the sound Taylor guitars give but I can’t break 00+. I was told the cheapest I could get was a Yamaha, but I didn’t like the sound at all. Any ideas?
The style I’m looking to play is folk, or some soft rock if that makes a difference.

I’ve seen people play acoustic guitars with picks and I don’t even know where to get guitars picks from. I like my guitar as it is but I also like things that are the color black and I like to be artistic, that’s why most of my folders have drawings on them xD, is it possible to spray paint it?
